Amazon is continuing its foray into automating the delivery process with the introduction of a new autonomous delivery robot.
The robot, called Scout, is an automated device that will deliver packages to Amazon customers’ doorsteps. Amazon has tested the device in certain areas and is continuing to expand its use.
Scout is designed to look like an oversized cooler on small wheels. It is powered by electric motors and can navigate sidewalks, curbs, and other obstacles. The device is equipped with sensors to detect and avoid obstacles, as well as cameras and a monitoring system to track its progress.
Scout is being developed with the help of Amazon’s robotics research arm, Amazon Robotics. Amazon Robotics provides insight into how robots can efficiently move goods, including some of the challenges associated with getting them out of warehouses and into homes.
Amazon has not yet announced when Scout will be available to customers. But, if the device proves successful in its current test locations, it could eventually become a common sight in residential neighborhoods.
The introduction of Scout is part of Amazon’s larger effort to automate the delivery process and make it easier for customers to get their packages. Amazon has already introduced drones for last-mile delivery, as well as a robotic fulfilment centre to speed up order processing. With the addition of Scout, it appears that Amazon is well on its way to making the entire delivery process fully automated.
